Education

I am studying at the Queensland University of Technology where I completed my undergraduate degree in psychology and articulated from a master of philosophy into a doctor of philosophy. In a previous life, I was a ski-instructor trained in the Australian system achieving my 3rd of 4 levels of accreditation.

  • QUT Doctor of Philosophy, 2019 - Current

    The Doctor of Philosophy at QUT which I am currently undertaking is focused on researching the determining factors of successful participation in esports and the influence esports competitions have on youth development. I have currently collected data for all my studies, and am currently preparing two studies for publication.

  • QUT Teaching Advantage, 2019

    Teaching Advantage (TA) is a professional development program for advanced PhD students at Queensland University of Technology. The program builds skills in teaching, unit coordination and forging an academic career through a series of interactive workshops. The workshops include in-depth activities and guest presentations to illustrate practical and relevant teaching, coordination, and career-building techniques.

  • QUT Sessional Staff Training, 2019

    The School of Exercise and Nutrition Science’s teaching support workshops series. Sessions are conducted fortnightly and cover topics such as: how students learn, engaging students in class, and gaining teaching feedback. As well as formal topics, sessions also incorporate informal discussion on any emergent issues that arise during the semester.

  • QUT Master of Philosophy, 2018 - 2019

    The Master of Philosophy at QUT focused on researching the determining factors of successful participation in esports. In early 2019, I presented to a committee of distinguished academics that my project had the scope to constitute extending to a PhD this was successful, and as of March 2019 my masters became a PhD.

  • QUT Advanced Information Research Skills (AIRS), 2018

    AIRS provides preparation for research at QUT by way of a systematic introduction to research skills and knowledge within the context of students' fields of research. AIRS lays the foundations of independent research, critical evaluation of information and effective management of information and research data, which will be further developed during the progression of a research degree.

  • QUT Bachelor of Behavioural Science (Psychology) , 2014 - 2017

    A psychology undergraduate course has required careful time and project management to ensure assessment deadlines have been met. This has been an exciting challenge, I generally always took on extracurricular activities outside of my coursework every semester.

  • Lifeline Assist IV, 2014

    Assist IV is the training program Lifeline uses to train their phone counsellors. This training has taught me many invaluable skills in communicating with people in highly unstable emotional states, and improved my interpersonal skills.

  • Australian Professional Snowsports Instructor (APSI) Qualifications, 2011 - 2013

    I am an APSI level 3 Ski Instructor with specialisation in teaching children and people with disabilities. This education has focused on three components – technical skiing, movement analysis/diagnostic reasoning, and pedagogical skills. These skills have assisted me in helping develop others’ potential and task enjoyment.

Achievements

I am proud of several achievements in my life. I was named ski instructor of the year in 2012 at Thredbo ski resort in Australia. In 2016 I was awarded a place in the QUT bluebox $250,000 innovation challenge and I have also been nominated for the vice-chancellor's award for excellence twice, once for my work in students as partners the other time for the founding of the QUT esports program.

2019

QUT Vice Chancellor’s Awards for Excellence – Nominee

I was nominated for the ‘Student as partner - individual award’ for work building the QUT Esports project during my undergraduate years. Highlighted in my nomination was the efforts spent drawing together multiple areas of the university and industry partners to launch the program, the building of the QUT esports arena. This project gained international recognition for QUT as a leader in the esports industry.

2019

QUT Vice Chancellor’s Awards for Excellence – Nominee

I was nominated for the ‘teaching and research excellence’ for my part in the Employability Project run by the Student Success Program. The Employability project was created including an employability framework and an online platform. The project was designed to allow students to self-identify their employability and tools to build upon a variety of factors of their employability.

2019

Named one of the 30 innovators and inventors in the last 30 years QUT

For my work in founding Australia’s first university endorsed esports program I was named as a key figure of the innovators and inventors from QUT in the last 30 years. Link in the appendices.

2016

Innovation Challenge Prize Winner, QUTBluebox: $25,000

My start-up company, LagSwitch, was awarded a prize into the summer accelerator of 2016, based on our innovative approach to education by utilising eSports to engage youth in education.

Golden Key Academic Honour Society

The Golden Key Academic Society is an invite only global honour society for students who achieve grades placing them in the top 15% of students academically at QUT.

Experience

Over the last 10 years I’ve gathered a range of learnings and experiences thanks to a number of research positions as well as hands-on industry experience. Lastly I have been active in various boards, both as director and member, which has given me valuable knowledge into the workings of boards as well as skills to craft strategic vision and tying it back to the community we’re serving.

  • Queensland High Schools Esports Board as Member 2019 - Current

    The QHSEB is responsible for guiding the direction of high school esports in QLD. I contribute to this board through my industry contacts, my study area in my PhD and my practical experience founding and operating the QUT esports program.

  • Qshelter Management Board as Board director 2019 - Current

    Q Shelter provides products and services that build the strength and capacity of the housing and homelessness sector. Q Shelter also works with regional networks and members to improve policies and programs responsive to the needs of people vulnerable to homelessness. As a member of the board I play a role in the strategy and direction of Qshelter as a company.

  • QUT esports advisory board as Founding member 2017 - Current

    The QUT esports advisory board is responsible for developing strategy and setting the direction for the QUT esports program. I contribute to this board by drawing on my experience developed during the founding of the program, and from my PhD.

  • XNB175 – Exercise Psychology as Tutor 2019 & 2020

    In this role I delivered weekly tutorials, which require strong presenting skills and weekly preparation to learn content for delivery. I also marked group presentations in this unit and moderate marks with other members of teaching staff. In 2020, I assisted moving the unit online during the COVID19 epidemic. I was also responsible for developing lecture and tutorial content part of this course.

  • BARLEYmax research project as Researcher 2019 - 2020

    Employed to design the survey for the BARLEYmax research project along with general research responsibilities.

  • XNB176 – Physical Activity and Health as Tutor & Guest Lecturer 2019

    Working as a sessional academic in the teaching team for XNB176. In this role, I have been assigned 2 lectures to deliver as a guest lecturer, requiring content preparation and delivery.   • Lagswitch Advisory Board as Director 2017 - 2019

    The Lagswitch Advisory Board was established to guide the strategy and direction of the Lagswitch company. As the director of Lagswitch, I relied on the Lagswitch board to make decisions about the direction and strategy of Lagswitch.

  • QUT Students as Partners as Project member 2017 - 2018

    I have been involved in three different aspects of Students as Partners. I participated as part of a multidisciplinary ideation team consisting of a diverse group of professionals, discussing and developing new and innovative solutions to the student support services at QUT. I was also involved in researching and writing a report on international academic governance models, which included students in the decision-making process. My third role has been working with the employability team designing and facilitating focus group workshops with staff, students, and industry (e.g., Architects, performance coaches, engineers, dancers and Government groups.) to collect data to inform QUT’s new implementation of the Career Development Learning Framework in both academic courses through online tools which guide students to real-life challenges.

  • QUT esports initiative as Founder / Director / esports coordinator 2016 - 2019

    I managed 30 passionate and motivated students and alumni in the first colligate eSports program in Oceania. QUT esports offers the first structured route from grassroots to professional participation in eSports at a university. In this role I developed the programs strategic direction, created industry connections, established revenue streams and provided leadership and development to staff and volunteers.

  • QUT VRES (Vacation Research Experience Scheme) as Researcher 2016 - 2017

    VRES has exposed me to qualitative research methods in a project that examines the personalities of two mentally tough AFL athletes. As part of this process, I have conducted a literature review and, subsequently, developed a strong understanding of narrative identity research in sport. I have also taken part in preliminary data analyses of these case studies with other members of the academic team. Together, this knowledge will contribute to the development of a peer-review paper that will be submitted for publication in 2018.

  • LagSwitch as Founder / Director 2015 - 2018

    I was the director of a QUTbluebox supported start-up. We delivered psychology workshops on mental toughness and performance to eSports athletes and, through these workshops, worked closely with sport scientists and professional eSports organisations (i.e., the Australian eSports Media Group & Athletico) to deliver improved psychological performance skills and strategies for professional gamers.

  • Working with Dr. Ian Renshaw, QUT as Research assistant 2015 - 2016

    As a Research Assistant for Dr. Ian Renshaw (Exercise and Nutrition Sciences), I supported projects using quantitative research. I was a member of a team involved in the data collection process, which has broadened my understanding of undertaking field experiments. I was also involved in the ethical approval process for this project. This experience greatly extended by awareness of (i) the ethics application process, generally, and (ii) the clarity of research design required to conduct experimental research.

  • QUT esports staff professional development as QUT esports coordinator 2014 - 2015

    In my role as the QUT esports coordinator, I frequently ran professional development sessions for our staff and student volunteers. These workshops focused on goal setting, semester planning and project management. I also ran coaching development sessions, where I delivered content on basic coaching principles and supported coaches to develop coaching presentation skills and basic coaching principles.

  • STIMulate as Peer Learning Facilitator 2014 - 2015

    As a Peer Learning Facilitator (PLF), I assisted the learning of anatomy, physiology and first-year psychology units for students in health-related courses. My GPA in these units averaged at 6 exactly and I had personal experiences of the challenges faced by students. I worked with students to deliver support for learning using online and face-to-face teaching modes. In this role, I worked with a diverse range of university students including mature age students, English as a second language students, and those with physical and learning disabilities.

  • Beaudesert State High School as Teacher’s Aide 2012 - 2016

    In between ski seasons I have worked as a Teacher’s Aide at Beaudesert State High School. In this position, I demonstrated autonomy and effective team work by taking the initiative to develop and deliver a new gym program for troubled adolescents with learning and behavioural issues. The scheme proved to be highly successful, as evidenced through the student engagement the program achieved.

  • Ski Instructor as APSI Level 3 2011 - 2014

    My role included working with children, adolescents and adults of all levels of skiing proficiency, and from different cultures and ethnicities. Exceptional time management, interpersonal and self-management skills were required in this role. I also developed the ability to deliver information to different types of learners including visual, auditory and kinaesthetic learners, as well as the progression based pedagogy taught by the APSI.

Publications

During my PhD, I have published 3 papers with 7 more expected by the end of the year, including 3 first author. My work includes topics such as exercise epidemiology, exercise psychology, coaching and pedagogy, stress and coping and esports.

Public speaking & media

In the last 3 years, I have had over 18 public speaking and media appearances related to my research and the esports program which I have founded. Public speaking is a skill I’ve developed over the last several years, which has allowed me to spread the message of my research and work.
